Escudo de Argentina / Shield of Argentina

The beautiful national shield of Argentina is in the form of an oval. Inside the oval, it is divided into two parts. One of which is blue in color, and one of which is a silvery-white. In the lower half, there are two hands intertwined and holding on to a spear. In the higher half, on top of the spear is a cap frigio, a symbol for freedom. Rising behind the oval, is the rising of a golden sun, with magnificent flaming rays, which symbolizes the birth of the new nation. Two branches of laurels, a type of tree or shrub representing military honor, outline the oval and cross at the bottom united with a ribbon representing the colors of Argentina's national flag.

There were a few rough drafts of the shield in 1810 and 1811, but the final shield, which became the National Shield, was established on January 31, 1813. The first known use of the shield was on February 22, 1813 in the Nacional Assembly.
